FIRE destroyed about 100 homes in an informal settlement in the South African city of Durban yesterday after a jealous girlfriend allegedly set one of the structures ablaze, police said. No-one was injured in the fire that started after a woman suspected her boyfriend of cheating on her, according to police, but two officers were hurt when they arrived and residents threw stones at them. “She locked him up and set the shack on fire,” Vincent Mdunge, a police official in KwaZulu-Natal province, said. He added that the man was able to escape safely and called police for help, but some of the residents supporting the woman threw stones at them when they arrived, seriously injuring two officers. The woman was being questioned by police.
